  Scrivere, in maniera completa, di questo 21 – come gli anni passati da Leisure loro prima uscita discografica - è impresa difficile: in 21 dischetti tutta, o quasi, la storia di uno migliori gruppi inglesi di sempre e sicuramente del miglior gruppo inglese degli anni novanta (e con questa affermazione personale ho subito sistemato La Diatriba: si, la stupida - quanto appassionante – guerra su chi, tra Oasis e Blur, fosse stato il re del Brit Pop di quegli anni e che ha visto i primi vincere la battaglia ma perdere la guerra a favore di Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James e Dave Rowntree i Blur).

  I Blur mi hanno salvato in un momento in cui, dopo la morte di Cobain, nessuna musica vicina al rock sembrava appassionarmi. Un loro infuocato, quanto sganghetato, show case (nel ’95 per la presentazione di The Great Escape  loro quarto album) allo Shocking Club di Milano fu una salutare boccata di aria fresca che mi riavviò all’energia facendomi tornare il diciottenne che al Palalido saltava ai concerti dei Devo o di Iggi (eravamo a cavallo tra i 70 e gli 80 per gli impietosi e i nostalgici).

  In questo cofanetto, che mi ha tenuto compagnia per tutta l’estate, i sette album in studio della band inglese sono espansi come succosi album doppi contenenti tutti i brani dei singoli, i singoli per i fan club, promo per mercati esteri (come una End Of A Century acustica per il mercato spagnolo), live alla Bbc/inglesi/giapponesi/tedeschi/olandesi, brani per compilation benefiche (come Eine Kleine Lift Music da Help War Child del ’95), colonne sonore (come Cowboy Song da Dead Man On Campus), remix (su tutte una Tender ben riletta da quel genio di Cornelius) e un pugno di brani tra demo e alternative version. Tutto con una qualità altissima!

  Ma siccome 7x2 fa 14 cosa ci manca per arrivare a 21?

  Innanzitutto, ben quattro dischi, cronologicamente costruiti, fatti di demo e inediti da cui segnalo: i proto Blur Seymour; le tracce prodotte da Andy Partrige degli XTC prima del secondo album; la Kissin Time in coppia con Marianne Faithfull; due, splendide, tracce inedite con la produzione di Bill Laswell del luglio 2000; il singolo del 2010 per il Record Day Store e Under The Wesway una bonus track scritta per i recenti Giochi Olimpici.

  Allora (7x2)+4=18…per arrivare a 21 mancano solo i 3 Dvd, quasi interamente dal vivo, che riprendono il quartetto nel ‘94  e nel ‘99 in due concerti completi (Dvd 1 e 2) e il live di 13 con vari promo video per quanto riguarda il terzo Dvd.

  Ma non è finita: nel bel box abbiamo il 7” in vinile Superman dei Seymour e, soprattutto, un booklet (18x18) di un centinaio di pagine full color con informazioni dettagliate sui contenuti, foto e una bellissima intervista alla band che ripercorre la propria storia.

  In questo bellissimo cofanetto, a me che non sono un loro collezionista, sembrano però esserci solo un paio di pecche: tra le 282 tracce audio non compare l’incredibile versione live di Tender che era nel video promozionale del brano e non è compresa la cover di Oliver’s Army (Elvis Costello) dalla raccolta Peace Together del 1993.

  A parte queste piccole dimenticanze,  questo 21 offre una nuova possibilità per ascoltare la storia di una pop band che, pur essendo british come poche altre (Kings e Xtc gli unici che vengono in mente a questo livello), non ha mai avuto paura del cambiamento e della novità arrivando a meticciarsi, con ragione e sentimento, con qualsiasi suono avessero voglia di esplorare. Nelle loro canzoni, e in questi anni, i Blur hanno toccato, con personalità propria, l’Africa, il rumore bianco, il punk, il pop, il suono di derivazione bowiana, il vaudeville… finendo per esplorare mille e più possibilità per una (pop)-music di qualità.
