Nelle tredici song del disco s’intrecciano composizioni originali come This Is How It Starts e Here We Are At Last ed evergreen come The Way You Look Tonight, Moonglow e Time After Time senza che nell’ascolto si percepisca una frattura creativa, grazie soprattutto al fraseggio della cantante nord californiana (una che può passare nello stesso pezzo da un’intonazione smoky jazz a una folk-rock ), sempre composto e prudentemente disciplinato, senza però mai apparire da cartolina.

English version:

Recording number nine for the vocalist Jaqui Naylor and first duo album with multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger Art Khu, even though such “marriage” is not a news considered the two artists are best known  for their work with full quartet whose engine is a combination of  jazz, soul, rock and popular  music.

With Q&A we float into a real jazz sea, clear, stylish, sometime even highly refined, above all connoted by the 88 keys of the piano and the Naylor’s voice. Permitted a Pindaric flight, it reminds the Crystal Gale performance directed by Tom Waits in One from the heart and, evocative power of music, it leads us into Central Park paths on a autumn afternoon, like unaware characters of a Woody Allen movie.

In the thirteen tracks of the record, original compositions like This Is How It Starts and Here We Are At Last walk together with evergreen standards such as The Way You Look Tonight, Moonglow as Time After Time without a creative break can be perceived at all, thanks to the phrasing of the north-Californian singer, an artist which can move from a smoky jazz intonation to a folk-rock one within the same song. A chant always commanded and disciplined without ever appearing a picture postcard of how a song must be sung.

The bitter romanticism of Once upon a summertime is maybe the purest gem of all this collection even though the gospel-jazz of More Than Words can’t start from a second row. As said before, it’s Jacqui Naylor’s whole career to tell us she’s an artist not easy to categorize. She can frame her voice both with the deep and soft tone typical of Cassandra Wilson and make it shake with a tight mood beyond traditional jazz air (it’s not a case that in her live show she can pick up from a wide-spreading repertoire, from Tin Pan Alley standards to Rolling Stones and Talking Heads tracks).

The sound is engraved by Art Khu’s meticulous work which, among piano, guitar, organ and bass, gives the record a palette of  sweetly amazing melodies. An evidence of the skill of this composer who some years ago was commissioned by the Oakland East Bay Symphony Orchestra the composition and the performing of Symphony Of Souls.

A record for those who feel close to the most lyrical and delicate melancholy. The one which is fed by colors that, got their highest brightness, now just starts their reverse turn leaving human hearts with a bunch of vivid memories.
