“Deva” takes intially shape when opera singer Beatrice Palumbo (22 years old, singer who received her musical education by the Conservatory of Milan G. Verdi) met with Federico Salerno (26 years old, guitarist and composer) and Miriam Stallone (24 years old bass player). The idea is to create a brand new concept to combine female opera vocals with progressive metal. The first step soon after was to get into a studio and record 5 original tracks, followed by a few concerts as well as festivals and contests, further to new compositions and the research of a proper line up; this is when keyboards start to be introduced to some of the songs by keyboardist Marco Castiglione, who officially enter the band’s line up along with drummer Thomas D’Alba, to complete what is up to date the Deva line up. The band has now recorded the first full-length album: “Between Life And Dreams”, which was entirely produced by the band.
The recording were completed at the end of 2009, mixed by Lorenzo Ardoni (SteelNight Studios) and mastered by Alberto Cutolo (Massive Arts, Milan): “Between Life And Dreams” is ready for life.
The artistic target is quite ambitious: combining the aggressive dynamics of metal with the stratified arrangements of progressive and a diverse melody line, which could take the tracks to be emotionally involving and accessible to even those completely alien to the genre.
The target of this product could be split into two different categories: on one side the faithful listeners of prog metal (from Dream Theater to Nightwish), on the other side those who appraise female vocals, both opera and modern.
In principle, the composing direction of “Between Life And Dreams” and the aesthetic taste of the band lead the project to be a vanguard, compared to the latest rock and metal trends, but, even further, the peculiar care of the band towards the classical music polish, set Deva to the borders of several musical genres. There is an attempt to detach from sub-genres of metal, such as gothic or power, which have also got inspiration from classical suggestions, even through female vocals with an opera base; this is also highlighted by Beatrice’s vocals tone which allows the band to distinguish from other bands with a similar line up. The Deva project submits original music, but, considering the wide live activity, includes a selection of covers from which time by time a few ones could be included during the concerts (System of a down, 30 Seconds to Mars to name a few)
The “Between life and dreams” will be available as of mid march on RNC Music/Orion’s Belt Records, distributed by Self.
